Nicole Kidman’s Mother, Janelle Passes Away At 84 After Battling a Long Illness

Popular Actor, Nicole Kidman, in a heartbreaking statement, announced the news of her mother’s death. The news came shortly after Kidman arrived in Venice to attend the Venice Film Festival. Just before winning an award, she received the unfortunate news of her mother’s demise which led her to leave the event and go to her family in the distressing time.

Nicole Kidman’s Mother’s Illness

Although the cause of Janelle Ann Kidman’s death has not been revealed to the public, it was disclosed that she had been suffering from several health issues for a long time. Amid the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nicole publicly announced her return to Australia in an attempt to be closer to her mother when she was facing health battles.

Janelle had also been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985 when her daughter, Nicole was just 17. In an interview, Nicole gave insight into the family’s difficult time stating that it’s hard to witness one’s beloved going through so much pain in front of their eyes. Her mother’s diagnosis gave her more awareness of the subject. This made Nicole and her then-husband, popular actor, Tom Cruise sponsor the Women’s Reproductive Cancer Center happening at UCLA.

Nicole’s Mother, Janelle’s Death

Nicole had just arrived in Venice when she was given the tragic news. She, therefore made the quick decision to go back to her family. The news arrived shortly before Kidman was announced as the winner in the ‘Best Actress Category’ for her role in the movie, Babygirl, at the Venice Film Festival, 2024. Although she was unable to attend and receive the award, she did release a statement thanking her fans and credited her mother for the award.

In the statement, Kidman stated her “shock” at receiving the saddening news. Furthermore, she gave credit to her mother saying that she “shaped, guided and made” her. The statement which was read by her movie, Babygirl’s director, Halina Reijn, continued to say that the combination of one’s personal and professional life (art) is truly “heartbreaking”.

Nicole’s Relationship With Mother, Janelle Ann Kidman

In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Kidman described her mother’s support to her in her career. Crediting her mother for her success, she revealed that Janelle “gave her fire” to continue the career she wanted. Janelle, unfortunately, was unable to pursue the career options she desired therefore she made sure that her children did not follow that path.

Janelle was a nurse educator. Her passion for women’s rights made her later become a part of the Women’s Electoral lobby.

Talking to the Fresh Air Podcast, Nicole revealed that her mother had been ill for quite some time. She continued to say that she was amazed by being able to have an outlook on the world through an 81-year-old’s eyes and was grateful for the opportunity. She also called the blessing “beneficial”. Giving more information on her mother’s health at the time, Kidman revealed that Janelle thankfully still retained her memory and had her “brain faculty available”.

After the death of her husband, Antony Kidman in 2014, Janelle is survived by her two daughters, Antonia and Nicole Kidman. Kidman’s fans continue to offer their condolences at the heartbreaking news.
