The Menendez Brothers’ Ethnicity And Early Life
The story of the Menendez brothers starts on May 6, 1944, when José Enrique Menéndez was born in Havana, Cuba. The Cuban-born José eventually moved to the United States at the age of 16, shortly after the Cuban Revolution. Here, he attended Southern Illinois University, where he met Mary Louise “Kitty” Andersen.

The two dated and eventually married in 1963 before moving to New York City. Here, the couple welcomed their first son on January 10, 1968, Joseph Lyle, who prefers to go by his middle name Lyle. Therefore, the first Menendez brothers’ ethnicity was New York City-born. However, the family didn’t stay in the Big Apple for long as they shortly moved to New Jersey.

The couple’s second son, Erik Galen, was born in New Jersey on November 27, 1970. As both brothers were around two years apart, they attended the same school. In 1986, José’s career took the family to Beverly Hills, California, where they lived. Here, Erik was able to shine by participating in various tennis tournaments. While all seemed well at first, something else entirely was going on behind the scenes.
What Was Going On Behind The Scenes?
Lyle and Erik’s cousin Diane visited the family in 1976. Here, Lyle confessed to her that his father was sexually abusing him. While Diane told Kitty what her son had told her, Lyle and Erik Menendez’s mother sided with their father stating that Lyle was lying. While Diane wanted to pursue the matter further, it was the last she heard Lyle make any such claims.

Lyle eventually went on to attend Princeton University. However, he was placed on academic probation for poor grades and was eventually suspended for plagiarism. Many now claim Lyle’s poor actions were due to the childhood trauma he faced at the hands of his father.
The Day That Changed The Menendez Brothers’ Life
On August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik entered their parent’s Beverly Hills mansion and unloaded their shotgun on the couple. The two then waited for the police to arrive thanks to the sound of the gunfire before claiming they weren’t home when the killings occurred. They were somehow able to get away, but not for long.
In the months following the murder, the brothers started spending extravagantly. From businesses to traveling and buying luxury items, the brothers spent around $700,000 collectively before the police eventually caught on to them.

Erik had told his therapist about the killing, who then told his mistress. The mistress told the police, and that’s how the Menendez brothers were eventually caught. However, their trial wasn’t easy.
What Happened To The Menendez Brothers?
Starting the trial in 1993, it was broadcast on live television and treated as a source of entertainment. Here, multiple things about the Menendez family came to light. Eventually, the brothers were charged with the murder of their parents. After a long trial, they were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The two brothers spent 22 years in different housing units before finally reuniting and bursting into tears and hugs. The unit they currently are in is reserved for inmates who agree to participate in education and rehabilitation programs without creating disruptions. However, it’s unknown if the two agreed to anything like that.
