Toyah Willcox’s Early Life

Toyah was born on 18 May 1958. The Birmingham-born actress’ father Beric Willcox owned three factories and ran a successful business. On the other hand, her mother Barbara Joy, née Rollinson was a professional dancer and likely the parent Toyah got her creative side from.

Toyah had an early interest in music, dance, and acting, mostly thanks to her mother. However, Barbara had given up the dancing life after giving birth to Toyah’s elder sister and brother. Fortunately, Willcox still enjoyed a financially comfortable childhood, though that didn’t stop her from getting bullied in her private girls’ school. Having a spinal condition, all the bullying prompted Willcox to lash out at her mother who she was close to.

Toyah’s rebellious behavior led to multiple issues, including adopting an aggressive identity, shunning the opposite gender, and getting only one passing grade in O-levels. Luckily for her, the passing grade was in music.

Willcox’s Long And Impressive Career In Arts

Going to the Old Rep Drama School in Birmingham thanks to her interest in arts, she had to pay privately because the assessor denied her grant stating she had a lisp and wasn’t attractive. Regardless, she began working as a dresser in local theatres. Her unique appearance and weirdly dyed hair earned her the nickname “The Bird of Paradise.”

Eventually, Willcox became fascinated with the punk movement thanks to her watching the Sex Pistols. Striving to do better, Willcox traveled to London to pursue a career in acting and music.

Starting from 1976 when she took a role in the year’s play on the BBC called Glitter, Willcox had a long path. Inspired by the same play, Willcox fronted a band called Toyah. Willcox hadn’t ever considered herself a musician, but she found herself headlining a successful band. With her previous trauma and apprehension toward the opposite gender and sex in general, she frequently found herself appalled by her bandmates’ antics with fans and groupies.

One standout acting offer she received was the possibility of a role in the Sex Pistols film, The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle, although that fell through. Her role as Miranda in The Tempest won her a nomination as Best Newcomer at the 1980 Evening Standard Award too.

While her career’s start was rocky, Toyah Willcox eventually led a successful career spanning over 30 years. Willcox secretly married British guitarist Robert Fripp in 1986 and continued her music and acting career even at the turn of the millennium.

The Effects Of Toyah’s Plastic Surgery

Many actors and celebrities start appearing less in the public eye when they hit a certain age. However, the same doesn’t apply to Toyah Willcox. On the contrary, the former actor and musician still appears in shows and released a solo studio album on 27 August 2021.

Gracing the entertainment industry for over 40 years, Toyah eventually buckled under the expectations and criticism of fans. Being in the public eye, Toyah’s plastic surgery gave her the confidence boost she needed. While Willcox has been public about using cosmetic surgery to give herself a more youthful look, it didn’t come without its issues.

Willcox states Toyah’s plastic surgery had scary aftereffects. She claims the recovery period after her surgery gave her signs of early Alzheimers. She’d forget things and couldn’t do the basic tasks. Fortunately, the effects were temporary and were likely caused by a combination of shock and anesthetic.

While her career is one to be proud of Toyah’s plastic surgery opens up a conversation about how actors are scrutinized. Female actors especially find themselves unwillingly doing things to their bodies that they regret later.
