Another accident was just added to the long list of accidents that happen frequently on Anthony Henday Drive. On September 23rd, a deadly accident put 3 people in hospital with serious injuries. It is believed that the accident was a result of drunk driving. Pictures from the scene of the accident are circulating all over social media with people pouring in their opinions on the matter and demanding better safety rules to prevent such happenings.

Anthony Henday’s Road Accident Today

On the morning of September 23rd, a Volkswagen Jetta and Acura TLX collided in what seems to be a life-threatening accident. The tragedy occurred in the west direction of Edmonton’s road somewhere between Calgary Trail and 111 Street. The 3 people residing in the Volkswagen are reported to have suffered major injuries and are currently hospitalized. According to Global News, the 22-year-old driver of the other car suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

In a news release by the police, the authorities gave details regarding the accident. Law enforcement believes that the 22-year-old driver was in a drunken state. The police report stated, “Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision.” They further disclosed that charges had been filed against the drunk driver and strict action would be taken against him in accordance with the Highway Development and Protection Act.

Aftermath of the accident

The accident disrupted the route of the traffic initially causing a jam. This led to the police closing a portion of Anthony Henday’s Drive. The alternate route was announced with the traffic being diverted back to 91st Street.

Frequent occurrence of accidents

The news of the accident comes just a few months after an earlier accident in which an excavator slammed into the overpass. The road was fixed at a hefty cost of around 2.3 million dollars. According to the police report, a semi tugging an excavator caused serious damage to the overpass. The Global News reported the damage caused, stating that the excavator broke concrete off the road and exposed rebar.

The Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors Department announced that the completion of the development would take place on February 28, 2025.

Drivers frequently using the Anthony Henday drive have repeatedly voiced their concerns regarding the unsafe route on the road. The construction often closing certain lanes further frustrates the drivers.
