Actress, Marlo Thomas Mourns Her Husband’s Death After Battling Long Illness

Renowned actress and producer, Marlo Thomas has always been a passionate health advocator. Her major contribution to cancer research is widely appreciated. However, this has led to speculations that Marlo’s illness is the reason behind her interest and healthy lifestyle. On August 18th, Marlo lost her husband to a long illness.

Marlo’s Name Was Initially A Mispronunciation Of Margot

Born in November 1937, Marlo Thomas is currently 86 years old. She was born in Detroit and then moved to California shortly after. Her parents, Danny Thomas and Rose Marie made sure that she grew up in a loving and caring home. She went to Marymount High School and later attended USC getting a degree in teaching.

Marlo’s Career Highlights

Marlo Thomas is a successful actor, and producer and is widely known for speaking up on social issues. She began her early career by acting in drama shows like ‘My Favorite Martian’, and ‘The Donna Reed Show’but was only given small roles and the shows were not too successful. However, in 1965, Thomas found success with ‘Barefoot in the Park’ which quickly became an audience favorite.

After being spotted for her acting skills on TV by a Network show producer, Thomas finally got her breakthrough. After many debates on whether the audience would be bored or not with a single female dominating the show, the network finally decided to cast Thomas in the show, ‘That Girl’. The show went against the norms of the TV culture showing an independent, solo female who was living alone. The show’s storyline was unique and was perceived as risky by the network. However, they were proven wrong when ‘That Girl’ became a massive success and also showed the way for other dramas to show similar characters. With 130 episodes, it is considered one of the best shows to date.

With the smashing success of her show, Thomas soon became one of the most popular actresses in America. She went on to act in tons of films consisting of various genres like ‘Starstruck’, ‘Playing Mona Lisa’, ‘It Happened One Christmas’, and ‘Held Hostage: The Sis and Jerry Levin Story’. All of these were blockbusters one after the other.

Thomas also impressed the audience with a cameo appearance on the comedy-drama, ‘The Practice’.

Thomas Has Various Other Successes Apart From Acting

Aside from being an amazing actor, Thomas is also a writer and has published 7 books; her most famous one being ‘The Right Words at the Right Time’ whose success assured the writing of a sequel. Her children’s book ‘Free to Be…You and Me’ became so popular that Thomas used the name in a bunch of her TV dramas. A few of these books also managed to be number 1 best-selling.

Thomas’s passion for social issues is evident in her actions. She co-founded America’s first women’s trust fund titled ‘Ms. Foundation for Women’. The organization dealt with the issues of women’s funds and also gave hope to them for better opportunities in the future. Thomas is currently the Outreach Director for a Children’s Hospital.

Thomas was awarded multiple awards not just for acting but also in relation to her other honors as well. To date, she has won 4 Emmys and a Golden Globe Award.

Thomas’s 44-Year Marriage With Phil Donahue

The duo met when Thomas was invited to be a guest on Phil’s talk show. They soon got married in an intimate ceremony and Thomas made Phil’s 5 children from his previous marriage her family.

After being married for 44 years, Thomas unfortunately lost her husband on August 19th, 2024, as confirmed by NBC News. She dedicated a Facebook post to her husband calling him her ‘sweetheart’. She mourned his death calling him ‘her beloved’.
