Is Mike Hoffman’s Wife The Reason Behind His Recent Trade To Edmonton Oilers?
Canadian hockey winger, Mike Hoffman’s recent trade to the Edmonton Oilers for a professional tryout (PTO) has led to some questions by the hockey fans. The news was confirmed by Oilers via X, formerly known as Twitter. His trade made people question if, like the previous two times, Hoffman’s wife was the reason behind this move given her involvement in past controversies.
Mike Hoffman’s Wife
Mike’s previous trade from Ottowa Senators to San Jose and then to Florida Panthers was alleged to be because of his wife. Mike Hoffman’s wife, Monika Caryk was accused by fellow player, Erik Karlsson’s wife, Melinda Karlsson of cyberbullying.

Melinda filed a lawsuit against Hoffman’s wife which took their feud to the next level. Erik and Melinda Karlson accused Monika of directing abusive tweets and emails towards the couple. Melinda even made accusations about Monika wishing death upon her unborn child. Melinda had a stillborn child a few months later.

Responding to the allegations, both Mike Hoffman and his wife, Monika Caryk strongly denied the claims made against them. Monika denied any involvement in the cyberbullying against Melinda and mentioned the website titled Talk Sports in regards to spreading rumors about her which led to Melinda’s change of heart towards her.
Hoffman’s wife then proved her innocence with the help of IT specialist, Kevin Horrocks who corroborated her claims of having no involvement in the matter. Horrocks confirmed that the indecent messages directed at Melinda were not written from Monika’s IP address.
Although Hoffman and his wife explained themselves and proved their innocence, their reputation was already harmed. It is alleged that the entire fiasco involving Mark Hoffman’s wife was the reason behind his trade to the San Jose Sharks as the controversy came in between the team’s morale and unity. Amid the allegations, he was shipped to the Florida Panthers in 2019.
Mike Hoffman’s Trade To Oilers
On September 18, 2024, the NHL released a statement announcing Hoffman being signed by the Edmonton Oilers to a professional tryout (PTO). The news comes after Mike’s dry spell playing for the San Jose Sharks. Playing more than 60 games, Hoffman was able to score just 10 goals, his lowest in a long time. An injury further fueled his disappointment with his season coming to an end. His previous team decided not to offer him another contract after the previous one’s expiration.

Oilers signing him to a PTO garnered mixed reactions from sports fans. While some appreciated the trade, happy for Hoffman’s career, others disagreed with the decision. Fans argued that given his previous performance, he would damage the Oilers’ reputation and even claimed that he would not be able to pass the PTO. However, Hoffman’s fans quickly came to his rescue reminding the haters of his remarkable stats. They defended their favorite hockey player saying that a bad performance spell does not equate to bad skills.
In his career, Hoffman has scored 228 goals, and 259 assists, making 487 points, in around 750 games played. His experience is said to be the reason for the Oilers acquiring him on their roaster.
This is 34-year-old Hoffman’s final season of his 3-year contract signed in 2021 for 13.5 million dollars. Although his performance has declined since the pandemic, he is still expected to return to form keeping in mind Hoffman’s top-scoring reputation.
