Georgia High School Shooter, Colt Gray Kills 4 and Injures 9 Others; Speculations Of His Mother’s Death’s Involvement In His Decision Are Rampant
14-year-old Colt Gray opened fire at Apalachee High School on Wednesday, September 4th, killing 4 and hospitalizing 9 others. He was soon arrested and was reported to have surrendered peacefully. The suspect left his Algebra class and returned to the room with a gun opening fire on his classmates and teachers.
Sequence of the shooting
According to Gray’s classmate, Lyela Sayarath, he left the class during their Algebra lecture at 9:45. Gray then returned to the class but was denied entry after a student noticed a gun in his hand and did not open the self-locked door. Thereafter, he went to a nearby class and began firing his weapon.

The police were notified regarding the incident at 10:20 am. The police force took swift action, immediately arriving at the scene and began the search for the suspect along with the school-appointed officers. The sheriff reported that the shooter surrendered himself straight away to law enforcement. An alarm was sent out and all the schools in the county went on lockdown.
Aftermath of the incident
In the immediate investigation carried out, the gun Colt Gray used was found to be an AR-15 style rifle. It is reported that the affected high school was informed of the shooting earlier via a phone call and even issued threats that 5 schools would be the target of the shootings, with Apalachee High School being the first attack.
Law enforcement has stated that as of now no reports of incidents have been received from other schools. Nevertheless, the schools in the entire district have been closed for a week as a precaution.
The suspect, Colt Gray was questioned about threats last year
After the incident, the FBI revealed that the local authorities received an anonymous tip in May 2023 about threats pertaining to a school shooting. The threats were quickly linked to Gray who was then questioned by the police. The suspect denied any involvement in the idea of a shooting and even refused any participation in online posts of gun images.

According to BBC, the officials interviewed his father too who informed the authorities that although he did have guns in the house, his son did not have access to them. With not enough evidence of a crime, the officials had to release them. They did, however, inform the school to keep an eye on the subject’s activities and to immidiately report any suspicious behavior.

Colt Gray’s Mother’s Death
Although the news is not confirmed, it is widely speculated that Colt Gray was influenced by his mother’s death to get the idea of a shooting.
Victims of the shooting
Four people were killed in the unfortunate incident. Two of the deceased were Math teachers: Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie. The remaining two deceased victims were Gray’s classmates, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. The injured were quickly transported to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

The motives behind the shooting have not been revealed yet. In the aftermath of the deadliest shooting in the state’s history, the victims continue to be remembered. Furthermore, the incident, which has garnered national attention has prompted questions on gun safety laws.
